OUT OF THE LOOP

a longitudinal, qualitative study in three Los Angeles, California public high schools, asking:

" Why are so few underrepresented minority youth
studying Computer Science? "

Out of the Loop is a three-year UCLA project, funded by the National Science Foundation, focusing on the computer science pipeline at the high school level. It seeks to shed light on a national problem--the low rates of participation of African American and Latino/a students in high school classes that prepare them to enter computer-related fields.

Specifically, we will examine the decisions of college-bound African-American and Latino/a students to take (or not take), persist (or not persist) in computer science courses beyond the introductory level. We will try to identify how the environments of high schools and the social and cultural factors that affect college-bound teenagers interests in and experiences learning computer science promote and constrain their participation. The sites of our investigation are schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District - one of the most diverse in the nation.
